CLIMATE CHANGE ACTIVIST URGES INCREASED INVESTMENT IN EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS FOR MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION

Kennedy Phiri, the Executive Director of Media Network Action on Climate Change, has stressed the necessity for Zambia to allocate greater resources to the development of Early Warning systems as part of its strategy to address climate change challenges.

According to Mr. Phiri, Zambia would reap significant benefits if its citizens could receive information about upcoming climatic conditions several months in advance.

“For instance the coming Rain season, how the rains will be and if the country will have drought or floods. Such a step is important so that Zambia is aware of prevailing climatic changes in good time,” he said.

Additionally, Mr. Phiri emphasized that all stakeholders bear a responsibility in ensuring that accurate information about climate change reaches the citizens.

“The farmers and people in all sectors must have the right information about climate change. That kind of information can only be available if we invest in early warning signs, and it must also trickle down to the citizens. All stakeholders have a role to play in mitigating impacts of climate change,” he said.

Mr. Phiri has also highlighted the significance of farmers adopting crops resilient to climate variations and embracing strategies of climate-smart agriculture.

He further noted that it is imperative for infrastructure to be constructed with the ability to endure climate change consequences, including events like floods.
